Modern interior style: key features, colors and how to pull it off in an ordinary apartment
Modern interior style: 7 key features, color palettes, how it differs from minimalism and neoclassical, and how to make it work in a 40–50 m² apartment.
Modern interior style is a calm base of light neutral walls, simply shaped furniture and natural textures, where comfort matters more than decor. It has no fixed canon: it is simply how homes are furnished today, so it fits almost any layout and budget.
Most articles about modern style show it in spacious apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows. Real apartments are smaller. In Russia, the average new-build apartment sold in January–February 2026 was 44.5 m² (Kommersant, based on CIAN data). What follows: the key features of the style, palettes and solutions for that kind of space.
How to recognize modern style: 7 key features
No single detail decides it; a modern interior is recognized by a combination. The list below is a guide, not a strict classification. If a room matches most of the points, you can safely call it modern.
- A neutral backdrop. Walls are white, gray, beige or taupe. Color lives in one or two accents.
- Simple furniture shapes. Straight or softly rounded silhouettes, no carving or gilding. Furniture on legs or wall-mounted.
- Texture instead of ornament. Wood, linen, wool, stone, matte metal. Patterns are rarely needed.
- Hidden storage. Floor-to-ceiling closets, flat fronts, slim handles or none at all.
- Several lighting scenarios. Overhead light, a lamp by the sofa, shelf or kitchen lighting.
- Open floor. Only as much furniture as you need, and walkways stay clear.
- A couple of pieces with character. A painting, an unusual armchair, a large light fixture.
What usually signals an old renovation rather than a modern interior: multi-level ceilings with perimeter lighting, glossy stretch ceilings, tile borders running across the middle of a wall. These are hallmarks of the 2000s. Modern style has moved on to flat matte ceilings and calm walls.
How is modern style different from minimalism, neoclassical and loft?
Modern style is a broad term. Minimalism, neoclassical and loft are its neighbors, each with rules of its own. People mix them up by wall color, although the main difference lies in the furniture and decor.
| Style | Backdrop and color | Furniture | Decor | Hardest to pull off in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern | warm neutrals and 1–2 accents | simple shapes, comfort first | moderate, through texture | almost no limits |
| Minimalism | white, gray, monochrome | very few pieces, everything hidden | almost none | families with kids and lots of things |
| Neoclassical | light pastels | classic silhouettes | moldings, symmetry, brass | low ceilings and small rooms |
| Loft | brick, concrete, dark tones | metal, leather, wood | industrial lights, exposed pipes | small rooms without a large window |
| Scandinavian | white and light wood | light and airy | textiles, plants | dark north-facing rooms |
In practice, the borders blur. A modern living room can borrow light wood from Scandinavian style and black metal light fixtures from loft. As long as the backdrop stays calm and accents stay few, borrowing like this doesn't break the style.
What colors work for a modern interior?
The base of a modern interior is warm white, light gray, beige and taupe. Color comes in through one large piece or several small ones in the same shade.
Designers often use the 60-30-10 rule. The main color (walls) covers 60% of the surfaces, the secondary color (furniture, curtains, floor) covers 30%, and the accent (pillows, a painting, an armchair) covers 10%. The rule isn't strict. It does a good job of keeping a room from looking busy, though.
| Palette | Base | Secondary | Accent | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warm and light | off-white, beige | mid-tone wood, linen | terracotta or mustard | people who want coziness |
| Contrasting | white, light gray | graphite, black metal | one rich color: blue, emerald | bright rooms with a large window |
| Natural | warm gray, sand | oak, stone, wool | olive, moss | people who love natural materials |
Which colors work together is covered in detail in our article on color combinations in interiors.
A wall color looks different on a store sample and on your own wall: windows, flooring and light all change it. So it's easier to test a shade on a photo first. Smart Edit in Desow changes the wall color or the material of a single object in a photo and leaves everything else alone. The tool works in a desktop browser.
How do you create a modern interior in an ordinary apartment?
Modern style doesn't need a lot of space, but a typical apartment has its own rules. Three things get in the way most often: a low ceiling, a small floor area and the wish to combine the kitchen with the living room.
A 2.5–2.7 meter ceiling
For new buildings, the Russian building code sets a minimum height for living rooms and kitchens: 2.5 m, or 2.7 m in several climate subzones (SP 54.13330.2022, clause 5.12). The rule covers the design of new and reconstructed buildings; older buildings have their own heights. In many new buildings the ceiling is close to the minimum, and every centimeter counts. Keep the ceiling single-level, use surface-mounted or track lights, and run closets all the way up. A closet with no gap at the top doesn't break up the wall, and the room feels taller.
40–50 square meters
In a small apartment, modern style relies on consistency. Where possible, one floor covering in every room except the bathroom, with no thresholds. One base palette for the whole apartment, with differences only in the accents. The rooms then read as one space, and the apartment feels bigger than it looks on the floor plan.
Furniture on legs and wall-hung cabinets help too. When you can see the floor under the furniture, the room looks more open.
Kitchen-living room
A kitchen-living room is a common choice in a modern interior, but taking down the wall between the kitchen and a room is a redevelopment. Under the Russian Housing Code, redevelopment in an apartment building is carried out with the approval of the local government and based on its decision (Housing Code, Art. 26). Get approval first, then demolish, not the other way around. Whether the wall is load-bearing and can be touched is decided by a project.
A gas stove is a separate case. In Moscow, an opening between a living room and a kitchen with gas without a tightly closing door will not be approved (Moscow Housing Inspection). So with gas, a kitchen-living room is usually built with a sliding partition or a door. If the wall has to stay, unite the zones visually: the same flooring, one palette, shared lighting. More techniques are in our article on zoning a room.
What to change to make an interior modern without a major renovation
You don't have to start with a renovation. Some changes make a visible difference over a weekend. The most expensive ones are best left for last, once the direction is tested.
| What to change | Entry cost | Impact | Renovation needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting: floor lamp, sconces, warm bulbs | low | high | no |
| Textiles: solid curtains, a throw, pillows | low | medium | no |
| Repainting walls in a warm neutral | medium | high | partly |
| Kitchen fronts and handles | medium | medium | no |
| A simply shaped sofa | high | high | no |
| One continuous floor covering | high | high | yes |
A common mistake is buying an expensive sofa or repainting the walls and then realizing the room as a whole doesn't come together. Before you spend, look at your room in the new style as a whole. Upload a photo to Redesign and compare the directions closest to modern: Minimalism, Scandinavian, Mid-century and Japandi. The images show what works with your floor and windows and what doesn't.
Example: the same kitchen in a different style
Here is a Redesign example from the Desow website. The original kitchen is dark: fluted fronts, brass, a geometric backsplash. In mood it is closer to Art Deco.

After Redesign, the same kitchen feels warmer: walnut-look fronts, green stone on the backsplash and island, light glass cabinets. The layout, the island and the window stayed in place.

An image like this shows a direction: color, materials, mood. It is not a design project, since it has no dimensions, construction details or specifications. How to check an image before a renovation is covered in our article on AI for interior design.
How do you try modern style on your own room?
Trying a style on your own photo is faster than browsing other people's interiors: you immediately see your windows, floor and ceiling.
- Photograph the room in daylight, from chest height, so the floor, the ceiling and two walls are in the frame.
- Upload the photo to Redesign and choose the room type. There is no separate "Modern" preset in the list, because modern is a broad term. Use the closest directions: Minimalism, Scandinavian, Mid-century and Japandi.
- Compare 3–4 versions with each other and with the original photo. Often one of them matches the modern interior you had in mind. You also see which of your current furniture fits.
- Note what you are keeping. If the kitchen or a closet stays, it should stay in the image too.
One Redesign version costs 10 credits. The Free plan gives 40 credits once at sign-up, exactly enough for the four directions above. How to compare several styles and choose one is covered in our article on choosing a style before renovation.
Frequently asked questions
How is modern style different from Art Nouveau?
Art Nouveau (called "modern" in Russian) is a historical movement from the turn of the 20th century with flowing lines, floral ornament and stained glass. Modern style is how apartments are furnished today: simple shapes, a neutral backdrop, texture instead of ornament. In English-language sources this style is more often called contemporary, while "modern" there usually means mid-20th-century modernism. The names sound alike in Russian, but they are different styles.
Does modern style work in a small apartment?
Yes, it is one of the easiest styles for small spaces. A light backdrop, hidden storage and furniture on legs make a room feel more open. One palette and one floor covering for the whole apartment work best.
Will a modern interior look dated in a few years?
Trendy accents date fastest: the color of the year, unusual furniture shapes, bold decor. Keep them in things that are easy to replace, such as textiles, art and light fixtures. A neutral base and simple furniture last longer.
Can modern style be combined with classic?
Yes. This mix is usually called neoclassical or modern classic: classic moldings and symmetry with calm modern furniture. With a 2.5 m ceiling, keep moldings thin and shallow.
How much does it cost to try modern style on a photo?
In Desow, one Redesign version costs 10 credits. The Free plan is enough for four versions, for example Minimalism, Scandinavian, Mid-century and Japandi. After that, subscriptions apply; the terms are on the pricing page.
In short
- Modern style means a neutral backdrop, simple furniture, natural textures and 1–2 accents. Comfort comes before decor.
- Warmth and room for decor set it apart from minimalism; no moldings or symmetry set it apart from neoclassical.
- In a typical apartment, a single-level ceiling, floor-to-ceiling closets, one floor covering and one palette help.
- Removing a wall for a kitchen-living room is a redevelopment and needs approval first. With a gas stove in Moscow, a tightly closing door or partition is required.
- Before buying furniture or repainting, try the closest directions - Minimalism, Scandinavian, Mid-century, Japandi - on a photo of your room in Redesign.
